This is the rough demo I made in my music tech class. My incredibly talented friend, Noah Fickel, has taken my vision and made beautiful tracks that I am now going to record vocals to! Looking back I see how much work this still needed but It is cool to see how far this song has come...but until you hear that... here is what I did in music tech.

(Think of it like this: if you could only listen to 5 songs for the rest of your life, which 5 songs would you choose?). NOTE: By definition, a song = a piece of music with vocals, lyrics and music.Rain/Reign- Hillsong United- I love this song because I resonate with the lyrics and the memories this song brings. First of all using the same rain/reign in the same context is absolutely beautiful specifically in the context of Jesus. I am from Washington and the idea of The Lord raining His goodness and presence and His promises like rain is a sweet thought. I also love how the song walks through different parts of the Gospel and my life as a follower of Christ. "Nothing could tear your heart from the covenant you made for love." Finally, I love playing this song in the quiet of night when its cold and rainy or playing it in the car.
Look Up Child- Lauren Daigle - This song is so fun to dance to and I love the message!
We Believe- The Newsboys- The lyrics are beautiful and the statement of belief is powerful.
Dear Me- Nicole Nordeman- Because THE BRIDGE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
And for my 5th song I choose to not pick because there are to many more... But if I could extend my list it would have more Contemporary Christian Artists like For King and Country, Jamie Grace, Britt Nicole, Francesca Battistelli, Kari Jobe, Musical Theater songs, Disney Channel Songs, Disney songs in general, Taylor Swift, and Malibu- Miley Cyrus.
List the Top 5 songs you wish you'd written, and one reason why for each. (Any reason is viable!).
I don't necessarily wish I had written someone else's song because that experience was that artists. The songs that have touched me the most have such beautiful artist stories and they are beautifully attached to that artist. However, writing some of the songs from the musical Hamilton would be pretty awesome because I would clearly have known so much about musical theater writing (which I would love) and also maybe I could be in the cast on broadway.
List what you believe are the Top 5 Greatest Songs Ever Written, and one reason why for each.
I must note that this is such a hard question.
Be Thou My Vision- Lyrics
Cha Cha Slide - Survives the test of time and brings people together in a encouraging way
The Embrace (The Chosen)- Watch the scene. Watch the entire episode. The musicality is insane.
Into the Woods Prologue/ One Day More(Les Mis)/ Non- Stop(Hamilton) - Some of the greatest in complexity and quality of storytelling
We Believe (Newsboys)- The statement of belief is amazing and simplistically powerful.
On the piano or guitar, do you understand how to build and/or play major and minor scales and chords starting on any note?
I can play basic chords on piano and guitar. I can play scales on piano but don't have them well enough to do under pressure. And I do not know scales on the guitar.
Proficiency in the art and craft of SongMaking requires some solid understanding of the entire process. Are there any parts of the process you find confusing, intimidating, or difficult? (i.e. from the initial song idea to producing, mixing and mastering?)
Recording, producing and mixing and mastering is difficult for me but producing is growing less intimidating and recording as well.
What instrument are you most proficient on? Also, do you sing at all (explain)?
Voice is my most proficient instrument. When it comes to songwriting, I am most comfortable writing on guitar or piano with basic chords.
Do you understand the concept of of "relative major and minor scales"
Yes.
Do you know how to build Major 7th, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th chords, Suss-4, and Add-9 Chords? If not, please list which ones you don't know.
I don't fully understand Suss-4.
Can you read, write, and understand basic rhythms (from whole notes to 32nd notes)?
Yes but playing/singing them from a sight-reading standpoint on the spot is still a work in progress.
Do you know the basics of how to setup a new session then record, edit, route tracks, and assign plugins in Protools?
No.
Which digital audio workstation (DAW) are you most familiar with and prefer using?
Logic Pro.
Do you understand how to put WAV files of individual drum samples into "the grid" in a DAW and make basic drum beats?
Yes.
Do you know how to set up a basic signal flow to record with a microphone and/or instrument without unwanted distortion (i.e. from the instrument to the mic, cable, pre-amp settings, interface input, setting gain, and recording in your DAW, etc.)?
Yes.
Do you understand the basics of how to use EQ and compressor plugins?
I've learned it but I need more practice with it because I keep forgetting how to navigate them.
Do you tend to use plugin presets, or use your own custom settings (explain)?
I don't have any custom settings at the moment.
How do you feel you learn best?
I learn best when its hands on learning and/or visual.
On average, do you prefer inventing/creating your own techniques or learning proven techniques (explain)?
I enjoy learning proven techniques when I am learning new information. I also like to experiment and create my own techniques after learning or right before I learn other techniques.
When it comes to your artistry, what are you most confident about? Also, least confident about?
My ability to bring ideas to the table with depth and fun. I am least confident in my ability to work with technology.
Describe your dream scenario for your career as an artist. Be specific!
To have music or a variety of arts (theater, movie, fashion line, writing, teaching) released that the Lord uses to advance and encourage His Kingdom in a way that reaches across social and linguistic borders. For instance, to have a Broadway show that shares the Gospel but is so captivating and musically incredible. Then for that show to be translated into another language and shared globally. Thats just one idea I have cooking. :)
Do you tend to envy other artists or feel competitive with them, or are you supportive of others?
Both.
On average how much time per day (or week) do you currently spend working on your craft?
I spend a large amount of time experimenting and trying new things with my voice. I usually operate when i'm inspired and that eps and flows. But I also can be creative in a structured setting. Currently at CBU I spend most of my day working on my craft :)
What brings you the most joy in both life in general and as an artist?
I love absolutely love getting to think and process the Bible in writing, singing, talking, dancing, drawing, ect. I love doing that by myself and with others. As an artist and child of God it brings me great joy to tell stories, create ideas and bring them to life, as well as connect themes and different aspects of life together. I like to see how the little things and things that often go unnoticed can point to the Lord.
What makes you most frustrated both personally and as an artist?
I have a hard time when I have an idea but struggle to get the ball rolling or to bring these huge ideas to life.
Do you see yourself as more of a leader or someone who is comfortable in a supportive position? If it depends, explain.
I am more of a leader when I understand what I am doing and/or what needs to be done. I usually take a supportive position when I need someone more experienced to direct the project. However, I can sometimes lead in a facilitating role of bringing people together and helping each person get what they are good at done. Currently, in music I have been leading with ideas but taking more of a supportive role in the process of getting those ideas done.
On average, As you grow and progress as a person and an artist, is it more important that you have fun, or do you believe in a no-pain-no-gain process? Explain.
I believe that both are important and there is a space for both. I try to focus most on worshiping the Lord and if that means adding a bit more fun to the mix then I should do that and if it means adding a bit more hard work in then I want to add that.
What are you 3 favorite movies/films of all time? And Why?
The Chosen- I love how it showcases the Gospel in a way that is deep, insightful, and moving.
Tangled- My personality is similar to Repunzel (Which is fun to have a character to relate to), the story is fun, and the music is well done.
Soul Surfer- I love the music, the story of how Christ and passions can align, and watching the surfing.
Also enjoy: The Chronicles of Narnia, Pitch Perfect 3, Multiple live action Disney princess movies, Priceless, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mall Cop, Pink Panther 2, Mamma Mia, Musicals, ect.
What are your 3 favorite artists of all time? And why?
For King and Country- The raw and creative lyrics and production is AMAZING. They are amazing to listen to and see live because of their vulnerability and how they share Christ.
Francesca Battistelli/Britt Nicole/Lauren Daigle- Honestly almost all worship artists and contemporary Christian artists I appreciate and enjoy immensely. I look up a lot to many of the women of Contemporary Christian music. It's really hard to pick just one.
Taylor Swift- So fun, genuine, lyrically talented, and emotive. She is also an amazing storyteller.
What are your 3 favorite songs RIGHT NOW? And why?
First Love- Kari Jobe- WOW. I love the idea of The Lord being the first and ultimate love of my life and the intimate setting this song paints.
Rain/Reign- It reminds me of the Lord and Washington.
Extravagant- Bethel Music, Steffany Gretzinger, Amanda Cook- I love how beautiful the melody and the harmony I like to sing is. I relate and am able to worship in the heart of the lyrics as well.
What emotions do you feel you most often feel the need to express through your artistic creativity?
In my writing I have to be genuine and authentic but the emotion can look different from song to song. I think the word to describe the tone of my songs best would be JOY. Not always happy or bubbly feelings but joyful and from my heart.
Is there one or more styles/genres of music that you despise/hate/can't stand?
Heavy Metal.
On a spectrum between 1 and 20, do you consider yourself more interested in technical perfection (1), or more interested in overall feel (20)? (For example, if it's an equal blend of the two you would answer: 10) Explain.
15
Have your parents been supportive of your artistry?
Yes.
Do you find that you prefer short bursts of learning/working with consistent breaks, or longer, focused times?
Probably short bursts and breaks. However, I enjoy sometimes just getting lots of stuff done and carving out a huge chunk of time to do it.
What are your thoughts or opinions on counseling/therapy/psychology?
I believe that is it important to have other christians in your corner supporting you and guiding you through the highs and lows of life and that there is great value in having someone who is educated to help you process and work through emotions and mental illness.
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being greatest), how do you personally rate the importance of the arts as entertainment or escapism? (as opposed to as a way to go deeper into ones thoughts and feelings). Explain.
5. I think the two go hand in hand for me. If its entertaining but lacks depth or something that I can process and relate to it is not as valued. Vice versa.
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being greatest), how do you personally rate the importance of the arts as a means of personal expression, communication and meaning?
8.9 . I think the arts are huge for personal expression and communication, although they should most certainly not be the only means of communicating. In terms of meaning I believe the arts are an opportunity for living out my purpose but not my purpose in itself.
Are you technically savvy with regards to computers etc.? (What programs are you familiar with? i.e. Protools, Logic, Garage Band, Photoshop etc.). Do you enjoy this technical/engineering side of music? Explain.
Nope. I am learning Logic Pro and starting to learn Pro Tools. I don't really enjoy the technical side of music but enjoy getting to watch and collaborate with other people who thrive in it.
What do you feel is the best thing about you as a person? The least best thing?
I am not shy of who I am and I love to dive deep in thought, creativity, and what I believe. I didn't know how to sum that up in a singular word? The least best is that I can often get caught up worrying or missing the bigger picture when priorities are not aligned correctly.
Do you feel it's important to finish everything you start, or do you tend to leave work unfinished for some reason? Explain.
I think that some creative things can go unfinished but I like to finish good ideas through when I think that it is worth the time and energy. Some songs that I write are purely for expressing myself in that moment. Other songs I want to see through the production and all the way to the finish line.
Do you often struggle with anxiety and/or depression? (if you'd prefer not to answer for whatever reason, simply answer: N/A)
I have struggled with anxiety off and on for about 5 years. I have been able to have victory over it through Christ, Community, and the gift He has given me of medication.
Do you plan to make music your full-time career? Do you have a Plan-B in terms of a career choice? If so, what is it?
Yes. This is where the Lord has lead me and until He leads me somewhere else this is where I will be. I would also enjoy coaching gymnastics on the side or being a history teacher in the future.
Define success in the most personal and complete way possible. i.e. What is success to you?
Success to me is my life mission statement:
To be a daughter of the King of Kings who loves, processes, creates, cares, and believes in and for the Lord's mission. So that He would be glorified, I would experience the very best life in Him, and so that I would make Him known to those I encounter.
Besides music, what other artistic mediums to you enjoy working in?
Ummmmm almost all other mediums. Spoken word, dancing, drawing, acting, painting, ect.
