Cassidy Smith
on the river
feelings wither and
feel that shiver
when you pull away your hand
panic rising
as the water does the same
i've been rowing
for months and weeks and days
don't rock the boat
i should've known
there was no hope
now i'll just try to stay afloat
stare in silence
in your head i was a phase
pillow talkin
in my bed you had a place
i know you changed your mind
but you can't change mine
can't help but dream of you babe
i know you don't lose sleep
thinking of me
can't help but dream of you babe
All my words fall short
I got nothing new
How could I express
All my gratitude?
I could sing these songs
As I often do
But every song must end
And You never do
So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
'Cause all that I have is a hallelujah
Hallelujah
And I know it's not much
But I've nothing else fit for a King
Except for a heart singing hallelujah
Hallelujah
I've got one response
I've got just one move
With my arm stretched wide
I will worship You
So come on, my soul
Oh, don't you get shy on me
Lift up your song
'Cause you've got a lion inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord
happy, happy birthday to me
sitting on the sidewalk,
pavement walls around me
loose t-shirt and go-to jeans
must've been a crazy party
don't you think?
don't you think?
don't you think?
close my eyes against the scene
never for a moment
had I thought I'd bleed
spinning stars shine so brightly
kicked out in a flash bang, pop whiz
chasing dreams
chasing dreams
chasing dreams
happy, happy birthday to me
sitting on the sidewalk,
pavement walls around me
loose t-shirt and go-to jeans
must've been a crazy party
don't you think?
don't you think?
oh, don't you think?
close my eyes against the scene
never for a moment
had I thought I'd bleed
spinning stars shine so brightly
then kicked out in a flash bang, pop whiz
chasing dreams
oh, chasing things
oh, I'm chasing
can't turn back, don't know what I'm facing
can I see the end to bear the in-between?
I'm circling
golden frame, Sunday best
coffee with a table of ghosts to impress
stung by words left unsaid
look me in the eyes and say I'm not a mess
Father, meet me here again
Help me to remember
Remind me who You are
I'll wait for You in the quiet
Bearer of my burdens
Comfort of my heart
I keep runnin' and runnin' and runnin'
Reachin' and reachin' and reachin'
It was always You
It was always You
And even when I have forgotten
You still care about my affliction
I just wanna thank You
I just wanna praise You
Grateful
Every morning new and You are
Faithful
Worthy are You, Lord
Worthy are You, Lord
Holy
I will lift my eyes up to Your
Glory
My hope is in You, Lord
My hope is in You, Lord
Refuge, call me out of shadow
Into Your compassion
Lead me through the dark
Jesus, on the cross You saved me
You have never failed me
This is who You are
I will speak only words that You ask me to speak
I will sing only songs that you want me to sing
You alone, I'll follow
You, who made the heavens
You deserve the honor
Jesus
You walk on the water
You can move the mountains
You will reign forever
Jesus
At the sound of Your voice,
The darkness must flee
Oh, oh
Jesus have Your way,
Send Your Spirit on me
you didn't get a childhood
got thrown to adulthood
I know that you've had it rough before
but things would be better if you'd just let em' be better
I just want you to be happy
I just want you to be fine
I know you've had it hard now
I just want you satisfied
with your time
they say to break em' with kindness
but I don't think it's working
I don't think it ever will
and when I ask you how you're doing
you say you're doing bad and you never ask how am I
(but) I just want you to be happy
I just want you to be fine
I know you've had it hard now
I just want you satisfied
you work hard, you pay bills, you do everything
that you have to do
that you have to do
but is it even worth coming back when you think of
all the love you lose
all the love you lose
if you'd just understand that complaining ain't the answer
and that kindness ain't a weakness
if you'd just come to know that people aren't out to get you
and the world don't circle ‘round you
how I wish that he would've tried to understand me better
would've taken time to know me
how I searched for that love in someone else all these years
when it should've been so easy
it should've been so easy
it could've been so easy
(still) I just want you to be happy
I just want you to be fine
I know you've had it hard now
I just want you satisfied
with your life
Used to lay by the stream
Soak in the sun
Color all around me
I haven't felt quite that way
In such a long time
Great fractals of light
Shone through the trees
The world would dim in silence
I haven't felt quite at peace
In such a long time
Take, take me back to simpler times
Take, take me back to peace of mind
I know, I know, I know it's time to go
Just let me be, let me walk here once more
I know, I know, I know it's time to leave
But I gotta say, I gotta say my piece
when I cannot find my peace
hide me in Your wing
call the storm to cease
in faith, I will believe
despite the suffering
I'll remain asleep
oh the waters rise
my thoughts, they lie
but I will not be shaken
oh, although I'm pressed
on every side
I know I'm not forsaken
I'm tired, and I'm worn
but with the scars You bore
You have won the war
I'll join the victor's song
cause with Your joy I'm strong
You‘ve been here all along
I have the same Spirit
It dwells inside of me
and as it is written
I believe so I will speak
lying dormant underneath the trees
watching closely through the leaves
I am waiting for
the Gardener
who will shape the flaws in me
tangled vines are all a mess
scratching limbs is pain's caress
how I want to breathe
unravel me
You can have my every "yes"
oh, how my heart cries out
for Your careful hand on me
You may walk my fields and streams
wander with me
growing toward my far-out plea
through the brick and stony sea
I am searching for
the Gardener
who will save the good in me
who will be my living spring
oh, how my heart cries out
for Your careful hand on me
You may walk my fields and streams
wander with me
prune me
shear me
cut this world from my branches
shape me
make me Yours
hold me
keep me
like a delicate bud in your palm
mold me
make me Yours
oh, how my heart cries out
for Your careful hand on me
You may walk my fields and streams
wander with me
times are always hard
stacking up the cards
waiting to see how far they fall
let me lean on you
and you can lean on me
maybe we can break down these walls
light up my path
light up my path
show me the way through the dark
light up my path
light up my path
show me the way
show me the way
Darling
What brought us here?
What home decor shattered carelessly on the floor?
Darling
i did my best
but you can't take back the crime i found in your drawer
I can't help you anymore
I can't help you anymore
I can't help you anymore
I can't help you anymore
You swore to me
Oh you swore to me
But what good are your promises when I saw behind
The bedroom door
Oh you swore to me
But what good are your promises when I saw behind
The bedroom door
Darling
Betrayal stings
Is that why you ran before I could say a word?
Darling
I can't refrain
A coward flees but he can't run from what he hurt
he had a drink on a Tuesday
at his favorite place
he stumbled home at midnight
that look was on his face
and he claimed that it wasn't him who hit his wife
but he knew deep down she deserved a better life
and he'll never quite know the hurt that he caused or the life that they could've led
he didn't know the power that he had
he, he's still trying
he, he's still trying
he, he's still trying
he's still trying
she was sitting in the wait room
signing paperwork
she was running out of options
running out of worth
the nurse came and led her into the next room
where the doctor scraped the baby from her womb
and she'll never forget the guilt of that day, wishing she could bring back the dead
she didn't know the power that she had
she, she's still trying
she, she's still trying
she, she's still trying
she's still trying
had a crush on a church boy
at 16 years old
maybe there could've been a future
i just didn't know
the fear came and i knew i could not walk that rope
so i told him one night that he should not hold out hope for us
but i'll never forget the pain in his eyes when he heard the words that i said
i didn't know the power that i had
please forgive me for i know not what i do
i swear i never meant to hurt you
just remember the sincerity in my voice as as i bow my head
i didn't know the power that i had
I, I'm still trying
I, I'm still trying
I, I'm still trying
I'm still trying
we were going camping
i was six years old
i was packing with my father
in the garage at home
going through boxes, so young and carefree
found a shiny metal piece, so i held it up for him to see
and i'll never forget the look on his face when he saw the gun in my hand
i didn't know the power that i had
had a crush on a church boy
at 16 years old
maybe there could've been a future

i didn't know the power that i had
passenger seat of your car
heaven sent but fell so far
now im on my knees
hear my pleas
i knew that this would be hard
speaking truth into the dark
inside out
upside down
oh, please release
your hold on me
I can, hardly, live with myself
just grind your teeth
and watch me leave
you're an old habit that's dying hard
our love seems so long ago
teenage me could never know
what to do
what i'd lose
i used to be good for you
but i wasn't the one you'd choose
took me years
now im here

(Think of it like this: if you could only listen to 5 songs for the rest of your life, which 5 songs would you choose?). NOTE: By definition, a song = a piece of music with vocals, lyrics and music. There are so many songs I could put here from all kinds of genres, but based on the prompt, I'm going to put the kind of music that I'd be okay listening to for the rest of my life: WORSHIP! It makes me happy.
I Thank God - Maverick City Music ~ This is my favorite song EVER. Nothing makes me wanna jump up and dance and shout more.
Promises - Maverick City Music ~ First Mav City song I ever listened to, opened the door for so many possibilities in worship for me, and I love everything about this song.
Grave Clothes - Tribl ~ The absolute VICTORY of this song. The beat, the vocals, the lyrics... all amazing.
I'm Gonna Worship - Maryanne J. George ~ I love the many sections of this song, it's like multiple songs in one! It's so worshipful and powerful, yet so tender and intimate.
O Praise The Lord - SONS THE BAND ~ Similar to "I'm Gonna Worship," just a song I can listen to and worship to over and over again.
List the Top 5 songs you wish you'd written, and one reason why for each. (Any reason is viable!).
Subject to change!
Messages From Her - Sabrina Claudio ~ feels very personal and relatable to me. I love themes of reaching for your past self.
Afterglow - INXS ~ so dreamy and wistful. feels bittersweet and can be applied to many situations.
Saturn - Sleeping At Last ~ literally the most beautiful song EVER. composition, instrumentalism, and lyrics are absolutely breathtaking to me.
A Silence Haunts Me - Jake Runestad ~ CHILLS EVERY TIME. captures what it means to be a true musician so well.
I'm Still Here - John Rzeznik ~ this is nostalgic for me, but I just feel at home and understood every time I play this song.
List what you believe are the Top 5 Greatest Songs Ever Written, and one reason why for each.
Ordinary Love - U2 ~ the lyrics are so unique and poetic. this song is nostalgic for me, I just love it.
Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap ~ objectively an incredible piece of work. one could analyze the lyrics for days, and the harmonies are those of a true musician!
Murder Song - AURORA ~ this song evokes all sorts of feelings in such a haunting way. I will always admire this artist's voice and emotions in the context of this piece.
Love Story - Taylor Swift ~ do I need an explanation here? Taylor Swift is one of the, if not the, greatest musical storytellers.
Saturn - Sleeping At Last ~ there's a reason this song is on two of my lists!
On the piano or guitar, do you understand how to build and/or play major and minor scales and chords starting on any note?
I can play scales and chords on the piano, but mostly only chords on guitar.
Proficiency in the art and craft of SongMaking requires some solid understanding of the entire process. Are there any parts of the process you find confusing, intimidating, or difficult? (i.e. from the initial song idea to producing, mixing and mastering?)
The producing, mixing, and mastering is the most intimidating part of the song-making process. Besides my one semester of Music Technology with Professor Jimenez, I have no other experience with the technological side of song-making.
What instrument are you most proficient on? Also, do you sing at all (explain)?
My primary instrument is voice with my secondary instruments being piano and guitar.
Do you understand the concept of of "relative major and minor scales"
I do understand the concept of relative major and minor scales.
Do you know how to build Major 7th, Minor 7th, Dominant 7th chords, Suss-4, and Add-9 Chords? If not, please list which ones you don't know.
I know how to build major, minor, and dominant seventh, as well as suspended and add-9 chords.
Can you read, write, and understand basic rhythms (from whole notes to 32nd notes)?
I can read, write, and understand basic rhythms.
Do you know the basics of how to setup a new session then record, edit, route tracks, and assign plugins in Protools?
I understand the basics. Plug-ins are still a little foreign to me.
Which digital audio workstation (DAW) are you most familiar with and prefer using?
I'm most comfortable with Garage Band and Logic.
Do you understand how to put WAV files of individual drum samples into "the grid" in a DAW and make basic drum beats?
Honestly, I'm not sure... I think so?
Do you know how to set up a basic signal flow to record with a microphone and/or instrument without unwanted distortion (i.e. from the instrument to the mic, cable, pre-amp settings, interface input, setting gain, and recording in your DAW, etc.)?
I don't think so.
Do you understand the basics of how to use EQ and compressor plugins?
I do understand the basics of EQ and compressors.
Do you tend to use plugin presets, or use your own custom settings (explain)?
I'm more likely to use plugin presets as I'm still a beginner.
How do you feel you learn best?
I learn best with a visual demonstration.
On average, do you prefer inventing/creating your own techniques or learning proven techniques (explain)?
I prefer using techniques that are already tried and true.
When it comes to your artistry, what are you most confident about? Also, least confident about?
As a worship leader, I've been more focused on representing God accurately than representing my own personality or feelings in any music I write. I'm still trying to find a balance in that. Overall though, I'm least confident about my ability to produce/mix my own music. It's undoubtedly harder being an artist in a technological world.
Describe your dream scenario for your career as an artist. Be specific!
When I imagine a personal dream, I imagine a setting close to that of Maverick City Music. I'd love to be on a united team of musicians, able to flow freely and reach many people, able to collaborate on original music for the church, and able to do worship nights and recording sessions. I think Mav City has a good balance of modernizing their music to adapt to the time we're in while still respecting and acknowledging the worship music that came before us.
Do you tend to envy other artists or feel competitive with them, or are you supportive of others?
There's definitely a balance of competition with any artist or peer. I think one can support an artist's growth while still being analytical of their music, either critically or educationally.
On average how much time per day (or week) do you currently spend working on your craft?
Right now, I do not spend as much time as I'd like on songwriting and making music. I'm incredibly busy with school, work, and church, but I definitely want to prioritize song-making in the future.
What brings you the most joy in both life in general and as an artist?
As a worshipper, I get the most joy in a moment of Spirit-led flowing, where I can sing or speak out a word from God. It makes me proud and happy when I'm in an environment where it is possible to obey God in that way.
What makes you most frustrated both personally and as an artist?
It is frustrating having to rely so heavily on technology and social media rather than just the pure, God-given gift. It is also frustrating seeing so many young people gain success so quickly as it puts a lot of pressure on people like myself to rush our own success. Sometimes I feel like there is so much music out there already that it must be impossible to create anything unique and original.
Do you see yourself as more of a leader or someone who is comfortable in a supportive position? If it depends, explain.
I'm typically more comfortable in a leadership position, but I am not bossy. I'm always happy to follow a person of authority when needed.
On average, As you grow and progress as a person and an artist, is it more important that you have fun, or do you believe in a no-pain-no-gain process? Explain.
I think it's very important to have fun with what you're doing so that you don't get burnt out. But, everyone goes through phases, and I think there's always some sort of balance between doing what you're passionate about and doing what needs to be done.
What are you 3 favorite movies/films of all time? And Why?
La La Land ~ the cinematography, the score and musical motifs throughout, the play on color and lighting, the acting, the pulling of heartstrings... need I keep going?
Crazy Stupid Love ~ can watch this movie over and over again. such a feel good and touching movie with such incredible acting, character development, and dialogue.
Moana ~ I get chills every time I hear the song "I Am Moana" and the song at the end... you know what I'm talking about. I don't care if it's childish, I think it's beautiful! What a great story.
What are your 3 favorite artists of all time? And why?
Taylor Swift ~ has any other artist transcended genres quite like Taylor Swift? with such a record, she still manages to put out wholely unique songs and stories, and in such a thought-provoking way.
Coldplay ~ truly a group of great musicians that will remain timeless for generations to come.
Phil Collins ~ I just love this man's voice, and every song he's done for disney touches my soul.
Honorable mention: Maverick City Music for worship!
What are your 3 favorite songs RIGHT NOW? And why?
I don't have any current favorites at the moment... will update at a later date!
What emotions do you feel you most often feel the need to express through your artistic creativity?
For worship music, I'm most inspired after I hear a message that touched me in some way or that I gained revelation from. For secular music, I'm usually most inspired by feelings of sadness, frustration, or anger, but at this point in my life, I'd certainly like to write more happy music than sad music!
Is there one or more styles/genres of music that you despise/hate/can't stand?
I cannot stand pop country and rap country. Authentic country is nice though! I also typically don't like rap
On a spectrum between 1 and 20, do you consider yourself more interested in technical perfection (1), or more interested in overall feel (20)? (For example, if it's an equal blend of the two you would answer: 10) Explain.
I think I may be an 8 or 9, slightly on the more technical side, but that is always subject to change!
Have your parents been supportive of your artistry?
My parents were always supportive of my general interest in music. I'm very grateful for my mom, who got me into singing groups and piano and voice lessons at a young age. My dad has not been entirely supportive of my pursuing music as a career since it isn't the most reliable industry... but he still respects my decision. Overall, they are more than I could ask for.
Do you find that you prefer short bursts of learning/working with consistent breaks, or longer, focused times?
I prefer longer, focused intervals of work. I've found that if I plan around short breaks, I end up getting more easily distracted as I anticipate those breaks! I'm good at digging deep and getting the job done, though.
What are your thoughts or opinions on counseling/therapy/psychology?
Mental health is obviously a real issue that afflicts many people, but I think one needs to be careful when in therapy or counseling to still heed what God says about you versus what the world says. The world of science has a bad habit of placing labels on people, and when you claim/receive a label for yourself, it gives the enemy the necessary ammo to close the door on your ability to receive healing. No matter what your diagnosis is, speak life!
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being greatest), how do you personally rate the importance of the arts as entertainment or escapism? (as opposed to as a way to go deeper into ones thoughts and feelings). Explain.
10. The arts were originally intended to entertain. The reason we watch television or listen to music that represents our current feelings is for the primary objective of momentarily escaping from whatever is thrown our way in our day-to-day lives. Works of art are meant to touch the deepest parts of our beings.
On a scale of 1-10 (10 being greatest), how do you personally rate the importance of the arts as a means of personal expression, communication and meaning?
10. As much as the arts are necessary for our society and for the general audience, they are also necessary as creative outlets for the individual. God made us to have a relationship with Him, and we are here to advance His kingdom. The gifts He gave us are supposed to be used for His glory. Whether you are primarily a secular artist or a religious artist, we all have our own spheres of influence. It's beautiful how we can use our gifts to build our own personal relationship with God and to reach people far from God.
Are you technically savvy with regards to computers etc.? (What programs are you familiar with? i.e. Protools, Logic, Garage Band, Photoshop etc.). Do you enjoy this technical/engineering side of music? Explain.
I am familiar with Garage Band and Logic, but I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as tech savvy. I don't enjoy this part of the process as much as the actually songwriting, but I think I'll like it more as I get more comfortable with it.
What do you feel is the best thing about you as a person? The least best thing?
I think the thing I pride myself most in is my ability to keep composure and not be ruled by my emotions, which may be unusual for the typical emotional artist... haha. I am not impulsive or quick to judge, and I think this has saved me from many conflicts and potential regrets.
My least favorite thing about myself is how difficult it is for me to be vulnerable and open. This has been especially hard for me as an artist because I've struggled with being comfortable conveying my true emotions in my songwriting and in my personal and work-related relationships.
Do you feel it's important to finish everything you start, or do you tend to leave work unfinished for some reason? Explain.
When it comes to deadlines, I will finish absolutely anything and everything. With my personal work, it's definitely a lot harder to find the motivation to finish things because all the other stuff I have going on usually takes priority.
Do you often struggle with anxiety and/or depression? (if you'd prefer not to answer for whatever reason, simply answer: N/A)
I do not struggle with anxiety or depression in any severe type of way, praise God. My heart goes out to those who struggle with it severely and frequently.
Do you plan to make music your full-time career? Do you have a Plan-B in terms of a career choice? If so, what is it?
Yes, I do! If music weren't to pan out, I think I'd at least still be interested in pursuing church and ministry in some aspect.
Define success in the most personal and complete way possible. i.e. What is success to you?
Success is happiness and life satisfaction in simplest terms. As a Christian, gaining souls for the kingdom of heaven!
Besides music, what other artistic mediums to you enjoy working in?
Music is my ride-or-die, honestly.
